Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Placement
What is a Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement?
Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement is a surgical procedure where a shunt is inserted to divert excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain to the abdominal cavity, where it can be absorbed. This helps to relieve pressure caused by conditions like hydrocephalus.
Surgery aims to treat the following conditions:
- Hydrocephalus: A buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, often due to an obstruction or imbalance in fluid production and absorption.
- Brain Tumours or Injuries: When tumours or injuries block CSF flow, a shunt helps relieve pressure.
